The other day when I showed you the mural in the game room here at Wunderland, I forgot to show you one of the coolest things about it! The carpet in the game room is covered in game boards–hopscotch, checkers/chess, parcheesi, cribbage, tic tac toe, dots, Chinese checkers, etc.
That is very cool and apropos for a game room, but the best part is that the mural was painted to be an extension of the carpet. The carpet goes up the wall about 6 inches and then there is a real rubber stair tread. Then there is the mural with two more painted rubber stair treads and a continuation of the entire carpet.
You can see the blue and green patterns continue all the way up the mural to the white wall with the red door in it. And two of the 76 games depicted in the mural–Chinese checkers and cribbage–are actually part of the carpet in the real game room, as well as the carpet in the mural. 🙂

When I first visited Wunderland, I recognized that carpet as the same kind that was in my childcare center when I was little! Which means that the Looneys must have been taking really amazing care of it all these years, because it must be about 35 years old! Even if it is a piece that wasn’t used as carpet until they bought their house, even that was over 20 years ago, right? I am glad to see it still looks so good.

Yes, ‘Becca, it is very old carpet, and definitely showing some wear in spots. And yes, it is meant for child care or school settings, and was therefore made to be for high-traffic areas, which has helped. I’m not sure exactly how old it is, but the mural is 23 years old. My guess would be the carpet was put in at the same time or shortly before. There’s a place called KidCarpet that makes something similar now if we need to replace it, but it’s not close enough to match the mural, sadly.

We installed the carpet (which we bought as a remnant) when we bought the house in December 1989.

I’m pretty sure Alex and Renee put it in their basement as new when they moved into the Conservatory, so it was still being made a dozen or so years ago.
