Rubik’s Cube Race

January 5, 2015

I posted a couple days ago about The Week Between.  Another thing we did during The Week Between was go to a gathering in Frederick, Maryland, which ended up being a slumber party.  🙂

But it started out with dinner out.  And while waiting for dinner, Kristin and I did what we frequently do… raced each other on the Rubik’s Cube.  Of course, Kristin won as she always does.  😉  But our friend, Rebecca Firefly Einhorn, shot a video of the event (thanks, Firefly!), and I thought I’d share it.  Sorry it’s a little dark.  It was restaurant lighting.  :/

So WHY does Kristin always win?  Because she has a long and interesting relationship with the Rubik’s Cube.  When she was just 15, Kristin solved the cube without any instructions–before instructions even existed.  At 16, she was on the TV show “That’s Incredible” and became the fifth fastest solver in the country.  This led to a part-time job with Ideal Toys going from mall to mall signing autographs and giving out “Cubists Do It Faster” T-shirts.  You can find Andy’s more detailed description of all of this–and a cute picture of 16-year-old Kristin–here.  And here’s a video of that episode of “That’s Incredible.”

Since then, Kristin has had a lot of fun in many ways with the Rubik’s Cube, and I will be telling you more “cube stuff” as time goes on!

  1. Thanks for the video! I had long suspected that I’d seen that episode of “That’s Incredible!” when it originally aired, because I loved that show and Andy’s description sounded so familiar, but seeing it and hearing that music makes me certain. I was 8 then. I never learned to solve the cube because I refused to read any of the cheat books and couldn’t figure it out on my own.
